"Mathematics on the Chessboard" Event at Alanya University as Part of the Council of Higher Education Science Cafe
the event titled “Mathematics on the Chess Board”, organized by Lanya University within the scope of Science Cafe activities, was held at Hasbahçe Private Schools.
At the event, Alanya University Library and Documentation Director V. and Chess Instructor Aslı Akgül explained with examples how mathematical studies can progress systematically through chess. Akgül emphasized that mathematical skills such as problem-solving, probability calculations, strategic planning, and analytical thinking find direct expression in chess.
At the event, it was pointed out that opponent analysis in chess is a rational process carried out beyond intuitive approaches; mathematical data, move patterns and possible scenarios. It was stated that this approach strengthens the ability of individuals to establish a cause–and-effect relationship and evaluate multiple possibilities in mathematics learning processes. Aslı Akgül, commenting on the event, stated, "Mathematics and chess are two fields of thought that progress together." While chess provides a concrete representation of abstract concepts in mathematics; "Competitor analysis equips individuals with the ability to think systematically and make strategic decisions," he stated.
The event, which the students followed with interest, ended after the chess games. Alanya University continues to bring science outside the campus and connect it with different segments of society through its Science Cafe events.
